The Remote Boot Floppy Generator application (rbfg.exe) is a tool that is part of Microsoft® Remote Installation Services (RIS), which is included in the Windows 2000 Server and Windows Server 2003 family. RIS uses the Preboot Execution Environment (PXE) to do remote OS deployment over a network. rbfg.exe is included to support clients that are not PXE-compliant. You use rbfg.exe to create a RIS boot disk that contains a PXE client. This client disk can then be used to network boot client computers that do not contain a PXE enabled ROM. Only one RIS boot disk is required for all of the supported network adapters. Versions Currently, RBFG supports a fixed list of PCI-compliant adapters; it does not support any PC Card, USB or ISA network adapters (see table below). There are two versions of RBFG shipping, Windows 2000 Server includes version 1 build 27, and Windows Server 2003 includes version 2 build 19. Argon Technology has an update to RBFG available, which supports additional adapters. See list below. If your network adapter is not supported by RBFG, or you need a fully compatible PXE client for your systems (RBFG only supports a subset of the PXE specification), you can buy Argon’s PXE on Disk® product. If your network adapter isn’t supported by PXE on Disk, Argon can create a customized version to meet your specific requirements. Just email or call us and let us know what you need. Argon offers other products, including PXE on Disk® that also provide PXE Boot ROM functionality on a bootable floppy or CD. Argon Client Management Software (CMS) ships with an integrated Remote Boot Floppy Generator that includes support for a wider range of adapters. If you don’t want to have to use a boot floppy in the clients, Argon also sells a PXE Boot ROM for all the major network adapters. When you install this ROM on your network adapter, it will be PXE-compliant.
